Three reasons why Maldives schools should start teaching programming to kids.

The importance of computer programing is not a subject of debate at this age. Programming is just as important as literature in this information age where everything is somehow linked to computers. From our cell phones to health care, everything is entangled with a computer. There is an uprising understanding that knowing to code (computer programing) especially for the younger generation is essential.

Learning facts is less and less relevant in a world where Google can satisfy just about any question in a matter of milliseconds; it is skills that will enable children to succeed, and that set of skills must include programming. Tynker (kids coding school)

Programming is the basic language of the digital age

Today’s young generation is growing up in a totally different environment than their elders or parents. Computers, Tablets, Smart Phones, YouTube, Netflix, and Facebook are tangled in their daily life. Even toys are digital and many are interactive programs such as digital play boards.

It is, however, one thing to know to use these technologies and one thing to understand them. Programming allows kids to understand the fundamental knowledge and actual know how of such gadgets/ tools work and demystifies them of the seemingly “magic” behind such technologies, and encourage them to further discover the logic and science that controls the technology. A discovery all more magical.

Our dependency on the technology will only increase. It is our responsibility to make our children (students) not only use these technologies but to make them understand and control it, becoming a big part of this technology leap.

Our education system must welcome such changes and allow our young generation to be familiar with the new age of technology.

Programming can change the world

For the better part of human history, the ability to write and convey information derived power. The educated the society the powerful they were. The power to change the world then was language. Today; writing and speaking are not at all tough. To change the world in this digital age, programming is the only viable way. From Bill Gates, Dennis Ritchie, Mark Zuckerberg and many more; these individuals did change the world with programming.

Bill Gates (founder of Microsoft) changed the world with creating computer software that majority of the computers use today. Dennis MacAlistair Ritchie was an American computer scientist who is credited with shaping and pioneering the digital era. He created the most commonly used C programming language. Mark Zuckerberg created the Facebook where today a Billion of users socialize online.

They all had some sort programming in their mind and changed the world in their different ways. Today; now that programming is fairly matured we must allow our kids to explore and learn to program themselves by teaching them the basics from the begging of school education.

To bring ideas to life (in business context)

At this day and age where more and more business is moving to the internet and embracing the digital life, the know-how of operating in the digital market is crucial for the success of the business. The most profitable businesses today are in a some way related to programming, some being 100% virtual. Walmart, the largest business in terms of revenue gets a fair share of their revenue from online sales.

computer-programming-techBusinesses like Ali Express, Amazon & PayPal are completely based on the internet and is leading their industry for the better. Without programming, such businesses would not have come to being and we would not have the convenience of shopping anything anywhere and have it delivered to our doorstep.

You may have an incredible business idea, if you do not possess programming knowledge it will be an additional cost and a barrier doing your business in this digital age. We have seen multiple businesses pop up and do fairly well in the Maldives that are completely web based. Jobsicle, iBay & Teaching Tube are such businesses.

Programming knowledge is not only important for digital businesses, it is important for good old fashioned businesses as well. Companies in the developed countries and in Maldives also spend a large sum of money on digital marketing, SEO, and other such activities. Companies with programming personals have the advantage in such activities as they are not limited by the resources they are provided with a certain vendor. Such as, a company could develop a program to send mass emails to its customers if their email marketing vendor is not available when needed.

If you would like your business idea or startup to succeed it is a no brainer to know programming. It will come handy at all stages of your business.

Over the years our education system is slowly moving from industrial age education and embracing modern techniques where students are allowed to think out-of-the-box. With this change, schools and other educational institutions are moving towards a more computer friendly system. Our students must be taught programming from all the stages of the school system to the point they are matured enough to make a decision for themselves.

Our higher education institutions must also welcome the use of computers and other digital means to prepare graduating students for the workforce where computer literature and programming is highly demanded in almost all jobs. It would be a shame to not know basic computer stuff with a university degree in any field.

There are plenty of ways to learn coding/programming. Websites like Codeacademy provide free interactive tutorials to learn most common programming languages.
